Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

The desert wind whipped sand against my face, stinging like a thousand tiny needles. I squinted, adjusting the focus on the 5D Mark IV. This wasn’t some studio setup, this was raw, unforgiving reality. I was chasing the last light of the day, hoping to capture the fleeting beauty of the dunes. The challenge? A client wanted crisp, detailed images, something that really popped.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. It’s a workhorse. The 30.4-megapixel full-frame sensor? It delivered, no question. The detail was astonishing. Even with the harsh shadows and blinding highlights, the dynamic range clawed back everything. It’s in the low-light conditions that this camera truly shines. That’s what sets it apart, for me. The 61-point autofocus system is lightning fast and remarkably accurate. Perfect for those unpredictable moments.

But let’s be honest, no camera is perfect. The 4K video capabilities are undeniably impressive, but the crop factor can be a bit limiting. Especially if you’re trying to use a wide-angle lens. Sure, you could compensate with the right glass, but that adds to the budget. Still, if you’re mainly a stills shooter, or you’re willing to work around the limitations, the video is excellent.

Compared to the older 5D Mark III? The difference in image quality is substantial, particularly in the highlights. Plus, the autofocus system is a generation ahead. I’ve never looked back.

The grip is comfortable, the controls intuitive. Canon, for years, has always built a solid camera. And the battery life? Surprisingly good. I was on location for hours, shooting bursts of images and a few short video clips. The battery indicator barely budged.

Consider it, the camera of choice for the professional photographer. But also for the enthusiast who wants to take their work up a level. If you’re a landscape photographer who craves detail, or a portrait artist who needs reliable autofocus, this is your camera. Go buy a fast lens. You won’t regret it.
